Every year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, the third Saturday in May it takes place a horse racing tradition. The Second Jewel of the Triple Crown takes place at Pimlico. Since 1932, the order of Triple Crown races has the Kentucky Derby first, followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes. Prior to 1932, the Preakness was run before the Derby eleven times. On May 12, 1917, and again on May 13, 1922, the Preakness and the Derby were run on the same day.

Preakness Stakes Handicapping

When you consider Preakness Stakes betting you will find a lot of big name trainers. You will notice Bob Baffert and D. Wayne Lukas and think that they are good trainers to bet on in the Preakness but that not always works. Lukas has won this race several times but his winning percentage is actually not that good. A better trainer in the Preakness recently has been Steve Asmussen who won with Curlin in 2007 and with Rachel Alexandra in 2009. Asmussen will have Astrology in this year’s race. Baffert is always a trainer to consider in this race as he has three wins this decade. One trainer that is not recommended for bets is Nick Zito. He has had a lot of starters in the Preakness but he has just one win and that came in 1996 when Louis Quatorze won at odds of 8-1. n this race at double-digit odds.

When you get ready to make your Preakness Stakes bet you want to keep in mind that the best post is #6 while the #4 is second best. The rail is not the kiss of death in the Preakness that it is in the Derby as a number of horses have won from the rail although many of those wins were early in the race’s history. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, favorites do very well in the Preakness. In fact, favorites win the Preakness nearly half the time. Longshots simply do not do well in the Preakness so don’t expect to see the huge payoffs that you saw in the Derby.
