The Kentucky Derby has seen the excellence of Kentucky Derby Winners such as War Admiral in 1937, to Secretariat in 1973, Seattle Slew in 1977, and Affirmed in 1978. In 2004, Smarty Jones won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, only to fall short in the Belmont stakes, losing to Birdstone. In all, the Kentucky Derby has hosted 11 Triple Crown Winners in its’ 134 year history.
2017 Kentucky Derby winner: Always Dreaming
Always Dreaming wins 2017 Kentucky Derby and becomes a legitimate contender for the Triple Crown. Always Dreaming won the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby in 2:03.59. He was never challenged in the stretch at Churchill Downs.
2016 Kentucky Derby winner: Nyquist
Nyquist is an American Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of the 2016 Kentucky Derby. He also won the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, becoming only the second horse to complete the Juvenile-Derby double.
2015 Kentucky Derby winner: American Pharoah
American Pharoah (foaled February 2, 2012) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the American Triple Crown and the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2015. In winning all four races, he became the first horse to win the "Grand Slam" of American horse racing. He won the 2015 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year and 2015 Champion three-year-old. He was bred and owned throughout his racing career by Ahmed Zayat of Zayat Stables, trained by Bob Baffert, and ridden in most of his races by Victor Espinoza. He now stands at stud at Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

2013 Kentucky Derby winner: Orb
Orb (foaled February 24, 2010 in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. After being defeated in his first three starts, Orb won five consecutive races, culminating with a victory in the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2013. He was retired at the end of the year to stand at stud at Claiborne Farm.

He came from the middle of the pack and ran down pace-setter Bodemeister in the final furlong to win the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby. 2010 Kentucky Derby Winner
Calvin Borel celebrates his third Kentucky Derby win. Super Saver got a perfect trip under Calvin Borel, rating off a torrid early pace before squeezing through on the rail at the top of the stretch. The son of Maria's Mon opened up on the field and then easily held sway to win by approximately two lengths. Final time was 2:04.45 on a sloppy track.
The jockey's magic touch on his home track gave trainer Todd Pletcher his first Derby victory after 24 failures with a 2½-length victory over Ice Box.
2009 Kentucky Derby Winner
Mine That Bird went off at 50-1 odds Saturday, but that was only one measure of how little attention he garnered before pulling away in the stretch to score a 6 3/4-length victory at Churchill Downs, the second-biggest stunner in Derby history. The margin was the largest since Assault won by eight lengths in 1946.
A son of Birdstone, Mine That Bird paid $103.20 after covering 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.66 seconds over a sloppy racetrack. The win payoff was the second-largest in Derby history behind the 1913 Derby winner Donerail that went off at 91.5 to 1 odds.
2008 Kentucky Derby Winner: Big Brown
Kent Desormeaux rode the favorite, Big Brown, to victory at Churchhill Downs. The unbeaten Big Brown took control on the home turn and cruised to a 4 3/4 length win. Unfortunately the runner up, Eight Belles, collapsed on the track after breaking both ankles and had to be euthanized.
